Doug Emhoff Privately Expresses Hesitation About Kamala Harris's 2028 Presidential Ambitions
The former second gentleman has reportedly told associates he would prefer his wife not to run for president again, though he is expected to support her decision.
Kamala Harris's husband, Doug Emhoff, has privately indicated that he does not want her to run for president in 2028, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. Despite these private reservations, sources close to Emhoff anticipate he would remain supportive should Harris ultimately decide to pursue a presidential campaign.
While Emhoff's personal feelings on a potential 2028 bid have surfaced, Harris herself has stated she has not yet made a decision about running again. She has been actively engaged in political activities, including participating in Democratic fundraisers and urging volunteers for get-out-the-vote efforts ahead of the midterm elections. Recently, Harris attended events for gubernatorial candidates in Wisconsin and Nevada, and addressed volunteers for the Democratic National Committee.
Some donors have also expressed skepticism about the viability of a 2028 presidential run for Harris, citing her performance in the 2024 election. In that contest, Harris lost the popular vote, the Electoral College, and all swing states to then-candidate Donald Trump, despite a campaign expenditure of approximately $1.5 billion.
Despite these concerns and Emhoff's reported reluctance, Harris continues to be a prominent figure in hypothetical 2028 Democratic primary polls, often leading the field by double-digit margins. She has publicly stated her focus on the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, suggesting that the outcome of that cycle will influence future presidential considerations.
Some allies of the former vice president have also expressed skepticism about her likelihood of running for president again. Harris and Emhoff recently purchased an $8 million mansion in Malibu. Emhoff has also joined the Los Angeles law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP as a partner.
