Dos Coyotes Closes Last Bay Area Location
The Mexican restaurant chain has shut down its San Ramon outpost, marking the end of its presence in the region.
The Mexican restaurant chain Dos Coyotes Border Café has closed its final Bay Area location in San Ramon, California. The restaurant announced that its last day of operation was Thursday, September 24.
Founded in 1991 by Bobby Coyote, Dos Coyotes aimed to be "a people's restaurant" and served Mexican-inspired dishes such as tacos, burritos, enchiladas, and quesadillas. The San Ramon location was the chain's sole remaining presence in the Bay Area.
Customers expressed their disappointment on social media, mourning the loss of the restaurant and reminiscing about their favorite menu items and memories.
The closure follows a trend of shrinking footprints for the chain, which has seen several other locations close in recent years, including multiple in Sacramento and one in Turlock. Dos Coyotes currently operates 10 locations across California, including several in Sacramento, Davis, and Folsom, as well as single restaurants in Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Roseville, and inside the Thunder Valley Casino in Lincoln.
This development occurs amidst broader challenges for Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant chains. In June, On The Border abruptly ceased operations after filing for bankruptcy and closing 60 locations nationwide. Similarly, Chevy's Fresh Mex has reduced its presence from over 100 restaurants to just nine locations across the country.
