Doobie Brothers Singer Michael McDonald Identified as Biological Father of 58-Year-Old Man

Michael Goessling, a St. Louis resident, recently learned that his biological father is Michael McDonald, the Grammy-winning singer known for his work with the Doobie Brothers. Goessling, who was adopted at birth, made the discovery through a letter and subsequent phone call that connected him with his biological mother and father.

The revelation came after Goessling's biological mother's attorney contacted him in May 2025, explaining she believed he was the son she had placed for adoption nearly 58 years prior. Goessling had always known he was adopted but had no information about his biological parents due to the closed nature of the adoption.

During his initial phone conversation with his biological mother, Goessling learned the identity of his biological father was a musician named 'Mike.' The connection to Michael McDonald became clear when 'Mike' mentioned he was touring and would be stopping in St. Louis. Goessling, a fan of the Doobie Brothers since childhood, was performing a concert at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater on September 4. He realized the musician's name and location aligned with his own concert schedule.

"Are you Michael McDonald?" Goessling asked during their conversation. McDonald confirmed his identity, leading to a moment of disbelief for Goessling.

"I thought I was being punked for a second," Goessling told Fox News Digital. "It's like, no, this can't be real. This is impossible. What is going on here?"

Goessling's biological parents were teenagers when they faced an unplanned pregnancy and, with their families' guidance, decided adoption was the best path forward. His biological mother had spent decades searching for him, and both parents had hoped to one day know he was well.

He met his biological mother for a three-hour lunch on his 58th birthday, 58 years after his birth. Following this reunion, his biological father, Michael McDonald, contacted him. Goessling initially expressed gratitude for being brought into the world and having a "charmed life." When asked about his profession, McDonald stated he was a musician. The realization that his biological father was the iconic singer he had admired, and even paid to see perform multiple times without knowing, was a profound moment.

Goessling noted that even before the discovery, people had commented on his resemblance to McDonald, especially after he grew his hair and beard during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raised by adoptive parents Paul and Kay Goessling, Michael Goessling described his childhood as loving and supportive. He expressed deep gratitude for his adoptive parents, stating he would choose them again if given the chance. The recent discovery of his biological family has expanded his world, with his adoptive mother embracing the reunion with enthusiasm.

Goessling hopes his story will highlight the positive aspects of adoption, which he views as a blessing. He emphasized that his experience has reinforced his belief in the value of adoption, stating, "Adoption has been absolutely nothing but a blessing for me. I celebrate adoption and I always have."
