Donnie Iris, the acclaimed rock musician celebrated for hits like “Ah! Leah!” and “The Rapper,” has died at the age of 83. His passing was confirmed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which reported he died on Monday. Iris had been diagnosed with bladder cancer three years prior to his death.

Known for his energetic performances and signature mirrored glasses, Iris fronted the band Donnie Iris and the Cruisers. His music resonated with fans, and his career spanned decades, establishing him as a beloved figure in the rock music scene.

Colleague and fellow singer Joe Grushecky of the Iron City Houserockers shared his sentiments with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, stating, “I don’t know anyone who was loved more than Donnie. He just had that warmth about him, and it came through in his performance.”

Earlier this month, Iris announced his retirement from music, citing “recent health issues” in a statement released on Facebook. He expressed deep gratitude for his journey, writing, “Music has given me far more than I could ever put into words. From the earliest days to every chapter of my life, your support has been a constant source of joy and inspiration.” He also extended thanks to his daughters, family, fellow musicians, crew, promoters, venues, and his dedicated fanbase.

Iris described his final performance on September 28 in his hometown of Pittsburgh as a “meaningful and fitting moment.” He concluded his retirement statement by thanking his supporters for their “grace and gratitude” during that event.
