Donald Trump Jr. has publicly supported former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom's intention to declare for the WNBA draft as a transgender player, predicting a record-breaking performance.
Kanter Freedom, 34, announced on social media his decision to attempt to join the WNBA in the 2027 season, stating he meets the eligibility requirements based on self-identification. This move follows comments by WNBA player Gabby Williams, who indicated she would welcome a transgender player on her team.
On social media platform X, Donald Trump Jr. wrote, "I'm going to go out [on] a limb here and predict Enes breaks every record in the WNBA in year one. She is truly going to make a spectacular women's basketball player."
Kanter Freedom, who last played professionally in 2022, stated in his announcement video, "If simply declaring who you are is all that’s required, then I meet every single requirement necessary to compete in the WNBA." He added that his team has examined the WNBA’s eligibility criteria and governing framework regarding self-identification and inclusion, and based on current guidelines, he is declaring his eligibility for the April 2027 WNBA draft. He also expressed his intention to ensure the guidelines are applied equally and consistently.
The former NBA player's declaration has drawn support from various commentators. Riley Gaines, a vocal critic of transgender athletes in women's sports, responded by saying, "Genius. Perfect. Waiting to see which WNBA team recruits." Piers Morgan also commented, "Brilliant… now let’s see how keen the @WNBA stars are for men to play in their League." Clay Travis voiced his approval, stating, "Amazing. Well done."
Kanter Freedom's announcement occurs amid a broader debate within the WNBA concerning transgender athletes. Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham previously advocated for restrictions to "protect young girls" from "biological men" in sports, a stance that has divided opinions. In contrast, Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has publicly supported transgender inclusion, notably by wearing a "Trans Kids Belong" t-shirt.
During a recent game, activist Riley Gaines was reportedly asked by WNBA staff to put away a sign supporting Cunningham, which read, "Sophie, Thank You - A Girl Mom." Gaines later shared images with Cunningham and expressed support for her stance.
The discussion also touches upon an executive order signed by President Donald J. Trump in February 2025, titled 'Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports.' This order directed federal agencies to enforce Title IX and explore legal action against institutions permitting male-born athletes to compete in women's sports.
Kanter Freedom, who was the third overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, played for teams including the Jazz, Thunder, Knicks, Trail Blazers, and Celtics during his NBA career.
