Don Mattingly to Depart as Phillies Manager After Playoff Exit
Despite saving the Phillies' season, Mattingly will not return as manager following their wild-card series loss.
Don Mattingly will not be retained as the Philadelphia Phillies' manager following the team's elimination in the National League wild-card series, according to a report from Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The decision comes after Mattingly took over a struggling team midseason and guided them to a playoff berth.
The Phillies and Mattingly are reportedly working towards a mutual parting of ways, with the possibility of him remaining with the organization in an advisory role. Mattingly stepped into the managerial position on an interim basis after the Phillies' initial struggles under Rob Thomson, inheriting a team with a 9-19 record.
Under Mattingly's leadership, the Phillies achieved a 79-55 record in the remainder of the regular season, ultimately securing a playoff spot. However, their postseason run concluded with a 1-2 performance in the wild-card series against the Atlanta Braves.
Mattingly addressed his uncertain future following the team's final game, stating, "It’s not the time to talk about anything like that. I’m not concerned about myself in this situation. I want the Phillies to do what they need to do to set themselves up for success. Yeah, I’m not really — it’s like, my stuff doesn’t really matter." He indicated he had not yet discussed his future or the upcoming offseason with Phillies general manager Dave Dombrowski.
The article notes that the Phillies' roster construction, featuring aging players on significant long-term contracts, may present challenges for the team moving forward. Players like Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Aaron Nola are noted as key veterans entering the latter stages of their careers.
Prior to Mattingly's appointment, the Phillies had reportedly offered their managerial position to Alex Cora, who was then with the Boston Red Sox. Cora had previously turned down the Phillies' offer before Mattingly took the helm.
