The Miami Dolphins have traded quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the teams announced Saturday. In exchange for the former Texas signal-caller, Miami received a 2028 sixth-round draft pick.
Ewers, who was a third-string quarterback as a rookie, saw action in four games last season, starting three. He accumulated 622 passing yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions for the Dolphins. His NFL debut occurred in Week 7 during a loss to the Cleveland Browns. He was named the starter in Week 16 after Tua Tagovailoa was benched and maintained that role for the remainder of the season, leading the Dolphins to a 1-2 record in those starts.
In his sole victory as a starter, Week 17 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Ewers completed 14 of 22 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns. The Dolphins' decision to trade Ewers comes after a preseason in which he struggled, completing only 1 of 8 passes in the single game he played. Ewers had attributed his poor preseason performance to a groin injury.
Ewers was a three-year starter at the University of Texas, where he led the Longhorns to consecutive College Football Playoff semifinals in 2023 and 2024. He was an All-Conference selection and, as a junior in 2024, led the Southeastern Conference with 31 touchdowns while completing 65.8 percent of his passes, despite splitting playing time with Arch Manning.
The trade adds intrigue to Jacksonville's backup quarterback situation ahead of roster cuts. The Jaguars could potentially save $1.2 million by releasing current backup Nick Mullens, though doing so would incur a $1.3 million dead cap hit. Mullens, 31, played in parts of five games in the 2025 season as a backup to Trevor Lawrence.
