Dolphins Derail Jets Defense in Upset Victory
Previously winless Miami scores early and often, exploiting defensive lapses in a 28-25 win.
The Miami Dolphins, who entered the game winless and averaging just 14.0 points per game, secured their first lead of the season and a 28-25 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium. The Dolphins offense found success against the Jets defense, particularly in the first half, establishing early leads that they would not relinquish.
The Dolphins received the opening kickoff and capitalized immediately, driving 76 yards for a touchdown to take their initial lead of the season. After the Jets managed to tie the game, Miami responded with a sustained 14-play, 60-yard touchdown drive, regaining the lead. This offensive prowess allowed the Dolphins to build a commanding 21-7 advantage by halftime, surpassing their previous highest point total in four of their first five games.
"Obviously, you don't want to spot a team 21 points in the first half," Jets linebacker Demario Davis stated after the game. "They did a great job of creating some really long drives. They made some good plays. Shoutout to them and the plays that they made. It wasn't necessarily anything we did wrong on the plays, but they just found a way to make a play in those situations."
While the Jets defense tightened in the second half, allowing only one touchdown, a critical breakdown late in the game sealed their fate. With the Jets trailing 21-17 and under five minutes remaining, a blown tackle by safety Minkah Fitzpatrick on a pass completion to Caleb Douglas resulted in a 63-yard touchdown for the Dolphins. Douglas had been left uncovered by a defensive miscommunication, and Fitzpatrick’s missed tackle allowed him to score untouched.
"We were supposed to have someone in the flat," Fitzpatrick commented. "It was in the flat. But I gotta make a tackle. … We let them make too many explosive plays."
The Jets managed to cut the deficit to three points with 3:24 remaining, but the Dolphins secured the win by converting two first downs, preventing the Jets offense from getting another opportunity to tie or win the game.
Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis proved effective, accumulating 208 passing yards and two passing touchdowns, in addition to 37 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown. His mobility was instrumental in extending drives, particularly in the first half.
"He's an athletic guy, he's a talented guy," said Jets safety Dane Belton. "No matter what people say about him, as far as the start to this year, he's had success in this league before. He's very talented. We definitely want to get out to a better start, especially when you put the defense out first. We expect a little different result."
