The Miami Dolphins have acquired quarterback Kyle McCord from the Green Bay Packers in exchange for a 2028 sixth-round pick. The move addresses Miami's need for a backup quarterback behind starter Malik Willis, following a recent trade that sent Quinn Ewers to the Jaguars.
The acquired draft pick was part of the return the Dolphins received from the Jaguars in the Ewers deal. This transaction continues a trend of personnel moving from Green Bay to Miami. Earlier in the offseason, the Dolphins hired Jon-Eric Sullivan as their general manager and Jeff Hafley as their head coach, both of whom previously held significant roles with the Packers.
Willis, who spent the last two seasons with the Packers, was signed by the Dolphins to a three-year, $67.5 million contract to be their starting quarterback after parting ways with Tua Tagovailoa. McCord is the latest addition to this group of former Packers.
McCord, a former standout at Syracuse, was selected by the Eagles in the 2025 NFL Draft but spent his rookie season on their practice squad. He signed with the Packers this past offseason. In Green Bay, McCord was reportedly third-string behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor. The trade to Miami presents an opportunity for him to serve as a backup and potentially see regular season playing time if Willis is sidelined.
During the Packers' preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals on Friday, McCord completed 22 of 35 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns. This trade marks the first between Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst and his former protégé, Sullivan.
