The Department of Justice, under President Donald Trump's administration, has launched an investigation into Arizona Democratic Senator Ruben Gallego concerning suspected campaign finance violations. The probe comes after reports detailed the spending of campaign funds on personal travel, luxury events, and expenses for his family.
Gallego's campaign funds have reportedly been used for trips to destinations including Florida, Illinois, and Disney properties, covering not only his own expenses but also those of his family. Federal Election Commission records indicate that his political accounts have reimbursed him over $18,000 for child-care costs dating back to 2019, including a $400 payment to his wife's mother for babysitting services.
These expenditures from his leadership PAC have drawn scrutiny. Campaign finance regulations permit spending on expenses connected to campaign or official activity, with looser restrictions for leadership PACs on fundraising-related activities. A person familiar with the matter noted that the senator's wife, children, mother-in-law, and au pair have often traveled alongside him for events supported by donors.
In June, a Politico report detailed how Gallego spent thousands of dollars from political donors. Filings also show Gallego and his wife attended the 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona using a shared political account he maintained with former California Representative Eric Swalwell. This account, the 'Swallego Victory Fund,' was a joint fundraising committee shared by Gallego and Swalwell, which was disbanded earlier in the 2025-2026 electoral cycle.
Gallego has stated that the expenses were permitted and highlighted the financial strain of child care on working families. He argued that elected officials from both parties frequently travel with their spouses and children and use campaign funds for child care when federal rules allow. "This is not breaking news," Gallego told Politico. "With the rising costs of child care and the burden it has on the budgets of American families, Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House alike regularly travel with their wives and children, as is permitted by the FEC."
A spokesperson for Senator Gallego criticized the investigation, stating, "Trump is targeting Senator Gallego while the most weaponized Department of Justice in history is turning a blind eye to Trump's unprecedented corruption." The spokesperson added that this investigation comes immediately after the Senate Ethics Committee cleared Senator Gallego of what they described as "right-wing smears pushed by the administration."
The Department of Justice has not commented on the matter. Trump's DOJ is reportedly investigating other political opponents, including Gavin Newsom, John Brennan, Adam Schiff, Letitia James, and Jerome Powell.
