Dogs Showcase Elaborate Costumes at Annual Manhattan Halloween Parade
The 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade saw canine companions and their owners don creative outfits, raising funds for a local dog run.
Manhattan's canine residents and their human companions gathered on Saturday, October 17, for the 36th Annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. The event, which took place along Avenue B and concluded in Tompkins Square Park, featured a parade and a costume competition.
Organized by the nonprofit New York Dog Parade, the event was initially founded to support the Tompkins Square Park dog run. Over the years, it has grown into one of the world's largest dog parades.
This year's parade saw a wide array of costumes, with dogs dressed as characters ranging from Batman and dinosaurs to hot dogs and even a New York City garbage bin topped with a pigeon. The creativity of the participants was a highlight, according to Fern Watt, founder of New York Dog Parade.
"Dogs bring us so much happiness, and this year's parade was a wonderful celebration of that," Watt stated. "The creativity this year was next level. From simple hot dog costumes to elaborate creations... every dog brought something special to the parade."
Snickers, a black and white Shih Tzu, took first place in the 'Best in Canine Costume' competition. Snickers was dressed as basketball player Jalen Brunson and was presented on a large, hollowed-out basketball court. His owner, Debbie, wore a New York Knicks t-shirt, a nod to the team's recent championship win.
Snickers received a ribbon signed by Chrissy Teigen and John Legend, who also made a surprise appearance at the event. Teigen and Legend are the founders of Kismet, a dog food and lifestyle brand, and they led the parade.
Other notable costumes included a group dressed in matching Despicable Me attire with their dogs as minions, and a Dachshund themed as a Wimbledon player, complete with rackets and balls. A pair embraced a DC Comics theme, with one dog as Batwoman and another as Batman.
Among the creative ensembles were dogs dressed as a shrunken-headed zombie alongside Beetlejuice, an Audrey II plant from Little Shop of Horrors, and a Chihuahua perched on a mock graveyard. Two pugs appeared in matching tiaras, and another dog was presented as a piece of art within a gold frame.
"We're so grateful to all the dogs and their humans for making New York City smile," Watt added.
