A dog's death in DeSoto, Texas, after allegedly being left chained outside for hours in extreme heat has prompted an investigation by local police and a community-driven petition demanding animal cruelty charges.

Rocco, a 2-year-old goldendoodle, reportedly died from heat exhaustion on August 8, according to his neighbor, Jaida Grace, who brought the incident to public attention.

Grace shared videos and photos of Rocco on the Public Accountability for Animal Welfare (PAWW) Facebook page, detailing her attempts to intervene. She stated that she repeatedly warned her neighbors about leaving the dog outside in temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-15 hours daily without adequate water or shade. Grace claimed she offered assistance, including providing water and even taking ownership of the dog, but her offers were declined.

"I begged and begged my neighbors to stop leaving their beautiful 2 year old Doodle puppy outside in this extreme Texas heat, chained up for 10-15 hours per day without water and shade," Grace wrote on Facebook. "I called Animal Control, offered to care for the dog and would've even taken ownership - but the neighbors declined all assistance and made every excuse for their neglect."

She further alleged that the dog's owners ignored Rocco's distress, and he was later found dead outside.

The DeSoto Police Department confirmed that animal control had responded to the residence on August 8 and was aware of circulating video footage. "The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available at this time," Captain G Kirkland stated.

In response to the incident, community members have launched a petition on Change.org calling for Rocco's owners to be charged with animal cruelty. The petition also urges Texas officials to implement stricter enforcement measures, including public awareness campaigns, accessible pet care resources, and more severe penalties for animal neglect.

"As members of this community, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that such cruelty does not continue unpunished and serve as a painful reminder of the dangers our pets face from neglect," the petition reads. The organizers accuse the owners of violating Texas law.

Grace shared screenshots of messages she exchanged with Rocco's owners, in which she alerted them to the dog's struggle in the sun and offered to provide water. She also noted that the dog appeared to bark less when allowed in shaded areas off-leash.

The petition has named Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot and Jessica Trevizo, Chief of Community Prosecution & Animal Cruelty at the DA's office, urging them to pursue charges.

This incident highlights concerns about animal welfare and the handling of animal neglect cases in the region.
