Dog Owners Urge Examination of Pet Records After Suspected Contamination Exposure
A couple believes their dog's death may be linked to historical chemical dumping after a walk in a contaminated area.
A Welsh couple suspects their dog may have died due to exposure to an orange, oily substance found on contaminated land near the Cefn Viaduct near Wrexham. Donna and Pete O'Brien noticed their four-year-old dog, Misty, rapidly declining in health after she waded through a swampy pool during a walk in December 2019. Misty returned from the walk covered in a greasy orange film that smelled and stained her coat for weeks.
Misty began to experience periodic diarrhea and vomiting, and by 2024, when she was nine years old, she struggled during walks and began coughing up blood and expelling it from her nose. An ultrasound revealed a heart tumor, with potential growths also suspected on her stomach and lungs.
The O'Briens believe Misty's illness and death may be connected to historical chemical dumping in the area, a topic recently explored in the BBC's "Buried" documentary. They are now calling for an examination of pet health records to identify any potential clusters of rare illnesses that could be linked to such environmental contamination.
Donna described the substance as a "greasy orange film" that smelled strongly and left Misty coated. While they initially dismissed it as possibly iron or copper washing through the landscape, its persistent oily nature and the subsequent decline in Misty's health raised serious concerns. Veterinarian records confirm Misty's deteriorating health, which progressed from intermittent gastrointestinal issues to severe respiratory and cardiac problems.
The couple's experience highlights growing concerns about the impact of historical industrial pollution on local environments and the potential health risks for both animals and humans. They hope that by encouraging a review of veterinary data, other pet owners might be alerted to similar potential risks and that a clearer picture of the environmental impact on communities can be established.
