Vermont State Police are investigating the abandonment of a chocolate Labrador discovered tied to a lamp post on VT Route 7A near White Trail Run in Arlington in the early hours of June 30. The dog was found at approximately 3 a.m. by the side of the road, with owners nowhere in sight. Officials have not disclosed how long the animal had been tethered or if it had identification.
A visible injury was noted on the dog's left leg, though details regarding its severity or cause have not been released. The dog is reportedly in foster care and is responding well to affection. Trooper Benjamin Prandini of the Vermont State Police Shaftsbury Barracks is leading the investigation and has urged anyone with information to come forward.
Incidents of animal abandonment are a recurring issue across the United States. According to Shelter Animals Count, millions of dogs and cats enter U.S. shelters and rescue organizations annually, with many facilities operating at or near capacity. In 2025, 2.8 million dogs and 3 million cats entered shelters nationwide.
Rescue organizations attribute the rise in abandonments to a combination of factors, including increasing inflation, soaring veterinary costs, and a shortage of pet-friendly housing. The ASPCA has also identified financial hardship as a primary reason for pet surrenders, making it increasingly difficult for some owners to afford care for their animals. Across the country, animals have been found abandoned in various public spaces, including parking lots, parks, and isolated roadsides.
