Dodgers Secure NLDS Game 1 Victory Amidst Stellar Hitting and Bullpen Concerns

The Los Angeles Dodgers began their National League Division Series campaign with a 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves in Game 1, highlighted by Teoscar Hernández's timely hitting and overshadowed by late-inning bullpen jitters.

Hernández's Playoff Prowess Continues

In a game that remained scoreless through three innings, Hernández ignited the Dodgers' offense in the bottom of the fourth. He launched a two-run home run, providing the team with a lead they would not relinquish. This latest postseason performance adds to Hernández's reputation for delivering in crucial moments. Over the last three playoff years, he has hit nine home runs and driven in 27 runs in 34 games, ranking second on the Dodgers in both categories behind Shohei Ohtani.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Hernández's knack for performing under pressure. "Teo is good in big moments because he’s not afraid to fail," Roberts said. "I think he has a short memory in the sense of, if something doesn’t go well, he has a way to just kind of reset, recalibrate. I think he just focuses a little bit more." Hernández himself expressed a desire to be the player relied upon in such situations, stating, "I always want to be the guy to be in those moments. I worked really hard for it, and I think the bigger the moment, the more focused I get."

Scott's Ninth-Inning Struggles

Despite the offensive spark from Hernández, the Dodgers' bullpen showed signs of vulnerability. Closer Tanner Scott entered the ninth inning with a 5-1 lead but allowed a home run to Ozzie Albies, narrowing the deficit. Scott was eventually removed with two outs in the inning after giving up the run.

Roberts defended Scott, who had recorded 25 saves in 29 opportunities as the de facto closer during the regular season. The manager asserted that Scott's "stuff was good" and that his trust in the left-hander remains firm. However, Scott's performance raises questions for the Dodgers' bullpen, especially after he missed last year's playoffs due to performance issues and a medical procedure. This outing was not the postseason debut the team had envisioned for the $72 million acquisition.

Defensive Contributions and Pitching Heat

While his bat was quiet, Tommy Edman made significant contributions defensively at second base. His diving stop on a Ronald Acuña Jr. grounder in the fourth inning was part of a streak of 15 consecutive batters retired by starting pitcher Tarik Skubal. "His defense today was outstanding," Skubal commented. "Just to keep those balls in the infield is one thing, but to get outs, that’s huge."

Skubal himself displayed impressive velocity, with one fastball recorded at 101.1 mph in the second inning, his hardest throw of the year. He attributed the increased intensity to the postseason atmosphere and the game's high stakes, joking that he was "just trying to match the temperature out there" amid the day's heat. Skubal later quipped about the heat, referencing a Little League game in significantly higher temperatures, but acknowledged the distinct intensity of a playoff contest.
