Speculation is swirling around the potential sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers following the $12 billion sale of the Los Angeles Lakers by Mark Walter. Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners, is reportedly under federal investigation for alleged loan fraud, a development that has intensified discussions about his ownership of the MLB team.
The Lakers deal, which was finalized less than a year after their previous sale, has led to widespread conjecture that Walter may need to divest other assets to manage potential financial demands from the investigation. While Guggenheim Partners purchased the Dodgers in 2012 for $2 billion, the franchise's valuation is now estimated to be around $8 billion, potentially offering a significant source of funds.
However, Stan Kasten, president of the Dodgers, has stated that the Lakers sale has no bearing on the baseball team. "This is a Laker story, not really a Dodger story," Kasten told the media. "It really has nothing to do with the Dodgers. They’re completely separate."
A significant complication in the Dodgers' ownership situation is the "key man" clause in the contract of superstar Shohei Ohtani. The clause reportedly allows Ohtani to opt out of his 10-year deal if either Andrew Friedman, president of baseball operations, or Mark Walter departs the organization. While The Athletic reported that Ohtani would not opt out if Walter were to sell the Dodgers, his contract's stipulations bring an added layer of intrigue to any potential ownership change.
Walter's Guggenheim firm also holds ownership stakes in Chelsea FC, the WNBA's LA Sparks, and has an interest in the new Cadillac F1 team. These assets could potentially be sold to raise funds, though none are expected to generate the same returns as the Dodgers.
Despite assurances from those involved that the Dodgers are not for sale, the rapid conclusion of the Lakers transaction suggests that no outcome is guaranteed. The Dodgers have become a dominant force in baseball under Walter's ownership, marked by significant spending and a commitment to winning, which has included Ohtani's arrival in December 2023.
