Dodgers Owner Mark Walter Faces New Fraud Lawsuit Amid Federal Probe

Dodgers owner Mark Walter has been named as a defendant in a class-action fraud lawsuit filed by a client of one of his insurance companies, Delaware Life. The suit, filed in the U.S. District Court of Miami, alleges negligent misrepresentation, breach of contract, and aiding and abetting fraud.

The lawsuit stems from claims that Delaware Life failed to disclose potentially improper loans made to other Walter-owned businesses as "affiliated" transactions. Walter, his Guggenheim Partners investment firm, and Delaware Life are all named defendants in the legal action, brought by law firm Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd on behalf of lead plaintiff Ira Rosner.

This legal development occurs while Walter's business dealings are already under scrutiny. He has been under investigation since last year by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York and the Securities and Exchange Commission. This probe began following a whistleblower complaint regarding alleged misrepresented loans between companies within his business portfolio.

Two of Walter's insurance companies, Delaware Life and Clear Spring Life and Annuity, have previously received grand jury subpoenas in connection with the federal investigation. In September of the previous year, FBI agents reportedly seized Walter's cellphone and computer while executing a search warrant aboard his private plane in Chicago.

Walter's holding company, TWG Global, denied any wrongdoing in a statement released last month, following the billionaire's sale of the Lakers. Walter has also since divested his stake in Chelsea Football Club. However, Dodgers officials have maintained that he has no plans to sell the baseball team.

The current class-action lawsuit marks the first time a client of a Walter-owned insurance company has initiated civil legal action against him. According to USA Today, the suit asserts that Walter and his companies engaged in a "systematic scheme to conceal and misrepresent the allocation of insurer assets in entities affiliated with or controlled by Walter." It also claims Delaware Life initially concealed the grand jury subpoena it received in February from investors.

A spokesperson for Group 1001, the parent company of Delaware Life, stated, "No court has ruled that Group 1001 Insurance or Delaware Life Insurance Company did anything wrong, and we intend to defend the case vigorously, consistent with our long track record of serving policyholders with integrity."
