Dodgers Lose Key Pitcher Blake Treinen to Season-Ending Injury
Veteran reliever Blake Treinen is expected to miss the playoffs after suffering a shoulder injury during warmups.
The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost veteran reliever Blake Treinen to a season-ending shoulder injury, manager Dave Roberts announced Saturday. Treinen suffered the injury while warming up in the bullpen during the Dodgers' 4-3 win over the San Francisco Giants in the second-to-last game of the regular season.
Roberts indicated that the injury is severe and will likely keep Treinen from participating in the upcoming playoffs. "His season’s over, unfortunately," Roberts said. Treinen is scheduled for imaging on Sunday.
Treinen, a 38-year-old right-hander, has been a significant contributor to the Dodgers' recent postseason success, playing key roles in their World Series titles in 2020, 2024, and 2025. However, he has battled arm issues over the past two seasons. Earlier this year, he missed two and a half months with inflammation in his right elbow.
Since returning in early September, the Dodgers had been managing Treinen's workload carefully, limiting him to seven appearances in the four weeks leading up to Saturday's game. Despite these limitations, he experienced the injury during a single warmup throw. The pain was immediate and severe enough to send him directly to the clubhouse with a trainer.
Fellow reliever Alex Vesia expressed the team's dismay, calling the situation "gut-wrenching." He added, "Blake’s one of our leaders out there in the bullpen."
Treinen's playoff experience, with 43 career postseason games, was considered valuable, especially after a notable 2 ⅓-inning performance in Game 5 of the 2024 World Series. His potential absence marks a significant blow to the Dodgers' bullpen as they head into the postseason. His future with the team is also uncertain, as he is a pending free agent.
