Dodgers Face Dynasty Crossroads Amidst NLCS Deficit

The Los Angeles Dodgers are confronting the possibility that their current era of dominance may be nearing an end, as they face a daunting three-games-to-none deficit in the National League Championship Series. The team, which has been focused on its immediate World Series aspirations, is now grappling with the reality that this might be their "final ride together."

Third baseman Max Muncy acknowledged the sentiment prior to the series, noting that "there’s been some talk of that" even though he preferred not to dwell on it. First baseman Freddie Freeman, reflecting on the team's accomplishments, admitted that the possibility of this core group parting ways had not crossed his mind until prompted. "But when you do think about it, it is special what we have accomplished over the last couple years," Freeman stated.

This potential transition comes as the Dodgers enter Game 4 facing elimination. "We still want this to keep going," Freeman said. "We know we have a lot left in the tank together."

While core players like Freeman, Muncy, Mookie Betts, Will Smith, and Shohei Ohtani are expected to remain, other roster changes are anticipated. Miguel Rojas is reportedly nearing retirement, and Kiké Hernández is set to become a free agent. The uncertainty surrounding a new collective-bargaining agreement could also lead to further adjustments to the team's roster.

The Dodgers reportedly explored trading for outfielder Teoscar Hernández last winter and could pursue similar moves this offseason, especially if new collective bargaining agreement terms impose stricter spending rules. The team also has several promising outfield prospects in its farm system. Key relief pitchers such as Alex Vesia, Evan Phillips, and Blake Treinen will all be out of contract, as will trade deadline acquisition Tarik Skubal. Freeman and Muncy are entering the final guaranteed seasons of their contracts in 2027, and the rest of the team will be a year older.

The team's decision to bring back most of its key contributors from the previous season, outside of the now-retired Clayton Kershaw, was an effort to maintain continuity and pursue a third consecutive title. "It’s a great group of guys," Freeman said. "Been through a lot, been all over this world together."

Now, facing a significant deficit against the Milwaukee Brewers, the Dodgers are leaning on those bonds. "Luckily it’s not a best of five, it’s a best of seven, so we’ve still got a chance tonight," Freeman said. "Our number one goal is not to think about the big picture of we need to win four in a row. It’s, ‘You’ve got to win today.’ And if we win today, then you worry about tomorrow."

Despite the high stakes and the potential end of an era, Freeman expressed confidence. "There’s no panic around here. We know we have a good baseball team. We can put this thing together real fast."

The outcome of this series will determine not only the Dodgers' immediate future but also the shape of their dynasty for years to come.
