Dodgers Bullpen Shows Playoff Promise in Rout of Padres

The Los Angeles Dodgers' bullpen demonstrated unexpected strength during their recent victory over the San Diego Padres, a performance that could prove crucial as the team aims for a third consecutive World Series title. While the Dodgers' ace-laden starting rotation, featuring Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Tarik Skubal, Blake Snell, and Tyler Glasnow, is expected to carry the load, the bullpen's effectiveness in a recent bullpen game against the Padres offered a promising outlook.

Last postseason, the Dodgers relied heavily on their starting rotation, which pitched 113 of the team's 165 postseason innings and posted a 2.55 ERA. However, anticipating potential regression in both workload and effectiveness from the starters, a robust and reliable bullpen becomes increasingly important. The relief corps, which faced challenges earlier in the season, showed signs of rounding into form during the game against San Diego.

In a XX-XX win, eight different Dodgers relievers contributed to holding the Padres' offense in check. The game began with an effective scoreless first inning from opener Brock Stewart. Justin Wrobleski, who is transitioning to the bullpen for the second consecutive year, managed to escape a jam in the second inning. Blake Treinen also delivered a strong performance, allowing only a walk in a scoreless third inning.

A significant highlight came from Roki Sasaki and Edwin Díaz. Sasaki, in his first appearance since returning from the injured list and moving back to the bullpen, struck out two batters and showed a fastball at 99-100 mph, working around a pair of singles. Díaz followed with his most impressive outing since his own return from the IL, retiring the top of the Padres' lineup in order with two strikeouts. He has now retired 9 of 11 batters he has faced since rejoining the active roster.

This strong bullpen performance occurred despite the Dodgers' offense providing ample support. The team scored four runs in the second inning, highlighted by Freddie Freeman's two-run single, and added more runs later in the game, including a solo home run from Tommy Edman and another from Will Smith.

Following the relievers, Kyle Hurt pitched two scoreless innings, and Alex Vesia and Jack Dreyer closed out the game with scoreless appearances. Key bullpen arms like Tanner Scott and Evan Phillips, who may be vying for closer duties, were not even needed.

While the Dodgers' ultimate goal is to avoid heavily relying on their bullpen in October, Tuesday's game against the Padres demonstrated that the relief unit is better equipped to handle postseason responsibilities than in previous years. This improved depth and performance come as the Dodgers have won 15 of their last 18 games, indicating they are hitting their stride as the playoffs approach.
