Dodgers Bullpen Poised for Boost with Key Reliever Edgardo Henriquez Nearing Return

The Los Angeles Dodgers are on track to welcome back a significant addition to their bullpen for the upcoming National League Division Series, with hard-throwing right-handed reliever Edgardo Henriquez nearing a full recovery from a back strain. General Manager Brandon Gomes announced Tuesday that Henriquez is expected to be available for the postseason opener.

Henriquez missed the final weeks of the regular season due to the injury, which initially raised concerns about his availability for the playoffs. However, he has made significant progress in his rehabilitation.

Before his injury, Henriquez had emerged as a crucial component of the Dodgers' resurgent relief corps. The team's bullpen led all of MLB in wins above replacement in August and September and ranked fourth in ERA during that stretch. Henriquez, 24, had established himself as one of the team's top arms, posting a 2.85 ERA with 70 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched. He also converted all save opportunities he was given.

His performance in August and early September was particularly stellar, allowing only one run over a 17-game span. His fastball velocity routinely exceeds 103 mph, making him one of the hardest-throwing pitchers in the league. His average fastball velocity of 100.7 mph ranked second among MLB pitchers this season.

Henriquez resumed throwing during the team's final homestand and recently completed a session of live batting practice without discomfort. While Gomes indicated that there are still a few steps to finalize before Henriquez receives the official green light, all signs point to his inclusion on the playoff roster.

"If that all goes well, then yeah, the expectation is he'll be on the roster," Gomes said. Manager Dave Roberts emphasized Henriquez's potential impact, stating, "I think he's one of those guys that getting the bye has really benefited."

Henriquez's return would provide a significant boost to the Dodgers' high-leverage relief options, adding a powerful arm alongside Roki Sasaki, Evan Phillips, Brock Stewart, and Edwin Díaz. His ability to consistently throw triple-digit fastballs offers a unique advantage.

Last postseason, Henriquez had mixed results. While he struggled in some appearances, he also pitched two scoreless innings in a crucial marathon game during the World Series, playing a key role in the team's championship run. This year, he is expected to be given a more prominent role, provided he clears his final hurdle of live batting practice.
