The Los Angeles Dodgers are adding a hard-throwing right-hander to their bullpen, calling up Seth Halvorsen from triple-A Oklahoma City. A source confirmed the move on Monday, bringing the reliever to the major league roster less than a month after he was acquired in a trade with the Colorado Rockies.
Halvorsen, 26, brings three seasons of Major League Baseball experience and a fastball that routinely reaches 100 mph. His promotion comes after six scoreless innings with Oklahoma City. He returns to the majors for the first time since late June, when the Rockies placed him on the injured list with shoulder inflammation. Earlier in the season, he posted a 4.74 earned-run average in 21 outings for Colorado. In his career, Halvorsen has a 4.31 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched.
The Dodgers acquired Halvorsen in a minor transaction two weeks before the trade deadline, sending prospects Nick Frasso and Landyn Vidourek to the Rockies. Since joining the Dodgers' organization, the former seventh-round draft pick has shown impressive stuff at the triple-A level, striking out eight of the 25 batters he has faced.
Halvorsen's arrival aims to reinforce a Dodgers bullpen that has recently struggled. Key right-handers Edwin Díaz and Evan Phillips have been battling inconsistencies since returning from injuries, while veteran options Blake Treinen and Brock Stewart are currently sidelined on the injured list.
