Dodgers Advance to NLCS After Clinching Series Against Braves

The Los Angeles Dodgers have secured a spot in the National League Championship Series after defeating the Atlanta Braves 4-1 in Game 4 of their Division Series. The victory keeps the Dodgers on track in their quest for a third consecutive World Series title.

Manager Dave Roberts made a decisive early pitching change in the fifth inning, removing starter Tyler Glasnow despite a relatively low pitch count. Alex Vesia was brought in to secure the final out of the inning, initiating a sequence that ultimately led to the Dodgers' win.

Roberts' strategic decisions extended to his lineup construction and bullpen management throughout the game. In the seventh inning, with the Dodgers trailing 1-0, Teoscar Hernandez singled with one out. Braves manager Walt Weiss replaced pitcher Tyler Mahle with Didier Fuentes, who induced a groundout from Max Muncy. Roberts then opted for rookie Josue De Paula as a pinch hitter against the right-handed Fuentes. De Paula drew a walk, and Tommy Edman entered as a pinch-runner. A subsequent walk to Kyle Tucker loaded the bases, setting the stage for Andy Pages.

Pages, who struggled in the postseason last year and early in this series, delivered the decisive blow with a two-run single to right field, giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. These runs were the first for the Dodgers in the series not scored via a home run. This marked a significant moment for Pages, whose three-year career has been marked by inconsistency in the postseason.

The bullpen management also showcased Roberts' tactical approach. Vesia returned for the sixth inning but allowed a leadoff double. Roberts then turned to Edgardo Henriquez, who had recently returned from the injured list. Henriquez was tasked with preventing the runner from scoring and then pitched the seventh inning. The eighth inning was handled by Tanner Scott, and Max Muncy’s ninth-inning home run extended the lead to 4-1. Edwin Diaz closed out the game, recording the final three outs.

The Dodgers' victory came even with Shohei Ohtani's continued struggles. Ohtani has been notably absent from the team's offensive production, with no home runs and only one RBI in his last 22 combined regular season and playoff games. Ohtani spent time on the injured list in September due to arm discomfort and also reported knee issues. His uncertain performance has led Roberts to adjust his lineup position, batting him fifth against left-handed pitching and fourth against right-handed pitching in recent games.

Despite his offensive slump, Ohtani contributed in the second inning by drawing a walk, stealing second base, advancing on a throwing error, and scoring on a dropped popup to tie the game at 1-1. His ability to score without a hit highlighted the team's resilience.

With this win, the Dodgers are now four victories away from reaching their third consecutive World Series.
