Dodgers Adjust Lineup for NLDS Game 3, Ohtani Drops to Fifth

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made substantial adjustments to their lineup for Game 3 of the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves, aiming to counter the formidable left-handed pitching of ace Chris Sale. In a notable shift, Shohei Ohtani has been moved from the second spot in the batting order down to fifth, the lowest he has hit since the 2020 season.

This strategic move comes after Ohtani managed only two singles in the first two games of the series. Manager Dave Roberts had previously indicated potential lineup changes, and the decision to drop Ohtani appears to be an effort to limit his matchups against Sale, who has historically performed well against the Dodgers star. Ohtani has hit just 3-for-15 against Sale in their previous encounters. Roberts expressed that chasing home runs against Sale might not be the optimal approach.

The Dodgers are also looking for an improved approach from Ohtani, who struck out twice in Game 2 while frequently swinging at pitches outside the strike zone. The team is hoping the change in batting order will encourage a more selective approach.

To further combat Sale, who posted a 2.16 ERA and 14-9 record this season, the Dodgers have made additional lineup alterations. Max Muncy has been replaced at third base for the second consecutive game by veteran Miguel Rojas, who will bat sixth. At second base, slumping switch-hitter Tommy Edman has been replaced by Kiké Hernández, who will make his postseason debut batting ninth.

Sale pitched a five-hit shutout against the Dodgers in August at Truist Park, underscoring the challenge the team faces. Miguel Rojas acknowledged the difficulty of the matchup, stating, “Today, we know we’re in for a battle. We know what he’s going to feature. We know his stuff. It comes down to execution on the day… We are going to have to fight every pitch, every out. And that’s what we’re in for.”
