A physician working as a DoorDash driver to support his wife's medical education was fatally shot in Philadelphia on July 7, police said. Md Mahfuzul Haque, 43, was killed in the Kingsessing neighborhood while on a delivery to an address where residents reported no food order had been placed.
Authorities have charged 15-year-old Zakah Johnson as an adult with murder, robbery, conspiracy, and firearms offenses in connection with Haque's death. Johnson was already in custody on unrelated charges when he was identified as a suspect and rearrested. He has been denied bail and is being held at the Philadelphia Juvenile Justice Services Center.
Police are still searching for two other individuals believed to have been involved in the shooting. Three masked men dressed in dark clothing reportedly fled the scene after the incident.
Officers responded to a call on South Ithan Street shortly before 9:30 p.m. and found Haque beside his running car. He had sustained a gunshot wound to the back of the head, and two spent rifle casings were recovered nearby. A DoorDash bag was also found at the scene.
Haque, originally from Bangladesh, had temporarily set aside his own medical aspirations to work temporary jobs, including food delivery, to support his wife, Minara Rahman, as she pursued an optometry career in the United States. Rahman, also 43, had enrolled in Drexel University's optometry program, and Haque's income was crucial for their family's finances and visa status.
Rahman told The Philadelphia Inquirer that her husband's support was essential for her to achieve her career goals. The couple met in medical school in Bangladesh in 2000 and later practiced medicine there before moving to Canada in 2011. They relocated to Philadelphia with their son in 2023.
Rahman graduated last year and began her practical training. She expressed her grief and disbelief at her husband's death, noting that he is one year older than her son and that she cannot comprehend such violence. She is also grappling with guilt over whether their move to Philadelphia for her career contributed to his death. She has since returned to Vancouver with their 14-year-old son, and Haque was buried there.
Haque's killing is one of at least three shootings involving delivery drivers in Philadelphia during the summer. In separate incidents, a 14-year-old boy was charged with luring a delivery driver to an abandoned rowhouse where he was fatally shot, and another driver was shot in the hand during an argument with two women.
DoorDash stated that the company is cooperating with law enforcement in their investigation into the "senseless act."
