Doctor at Children's Hospital Fatally Stabbed in Home Invasion

A leading physician at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh was fatally stabbed in his home on Thursday after an intruder allegedly entered the residence through an open window and attacked him and his wife as they slept.

Dr. Idris Evans, 46, a pediatric critical care physician and medical director at the hospital, died following the early-morning assault in his Edgewood, Pennsylvania, home. His wife sustained serious injuries but managed to alert their two children, aged eight and 12, who escaped the home unharmed.

Police have charged 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass in connection with the incident. Investigators stated that Hemingway entered the home through an unlocked window and proceeded to the third floor, where Dr. Evans and his wife were sleeping.

According to court documents, the couple awoke around 12:30 a.m. to find an intruder attacking them with a kitchen knife. Dr. Evans' wife told investigators that the alleged attacker was partially clothed and made statements about being "God" during the encounter. She reported that she and her husband fought back against the assailant.

Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph described the scene as "very violent," noting broken bedroom furniture and mirrors. Dr. Evans' wife screamed for their children to flee and seek help from a neighbor, and she eventually escaped herself to summon police.

Officers arriving at the scene found both Dr. Evans and his wife with multiple stab wounds. They were transported to a hospital in critical condition, but Dr. Evans could not be saved. His wife reportedly mentioned her husband addressing the attacker as "Elijah" during the struggle, raising questions about whether the two men knew each other, a detail police are still investigating.

Authorities located Hemingway behind a nearby home with cuts to his hand. Neighbor Sandra Trappen reported hearing police activity and later discovered Hemingway, who appeared to be injured and bleeding, concealed in her garden. Hemingway was taken to a hospital for treatment.

During an interview, Hemingway reportedly claimed Dr. Evans had invited him to the house hours earlier and that the couple had attacked him. Police stated that Hemingway could not provide supporting details for this account. No motive has been officially announced, and the circumstances of any potential prior connection between Hemingway and Dr. Evans remain under investigation.

Dr. Evans dedicated his career to caring for critically ill children. He served as the medical director of the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. UPMC and University of Pittsburgh colleagues expressed deep sadness over his death, calling him a "dedicated caregiver and valued member" of their communities.

Edgewood police acknowledged the impact of the killing on the community and urged residents to avoid spreading rumors or graphic material to respect the privacy of Dr. Evans' family and neighbors.
