The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has admitted to losing $29,000 in a phishing scam that targeted a committee staffer who was impersonating party chair Ken Martin. The incident occurred in February 2025 when an individual, pretending to be Martin, sent an email requesting funds.

The DNC spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg stated that the organization takes its duty to protect funds seriously and described the event as a "one-off mistake that was promptly caught and addressed." Despite reporting the phishing attempt to Wells Fargo, only $7,000 of the lost money was recovered, according to NOTUS.

This incident comes at a time when the DNC is facing significant financial challenges. Campaign finance records indicate the organization is $18.5 million in debt, and its headquarters building has been used as collateral for a $15 million line of credit to cover expenses. A party spokesperson noted that using the building as collateral for lines of credit is not new, having occurred in multiple prior years.

Ken Martin has been leading the DNC since shortly after Kamala Harris's defeat. Reports from The New York Times suggest that the financial pressures have been impacting Martin, with an incident in early July where he allegedly threw a phone onto a junior aide's desk while reprimanding the staffer. This event reportedly led to a formal complaint filed with the DNC's human resources department.

Despite its financial difficulties, the DNC has reported strong fundraising numbers. Martin stated that the current DNC has raised more money than any DNC without the White House in the party's 198-year history. Recent polling indicates that Democrats are leading Republicans on the generic ballot by over nine points in an upcoming midterm election, a full point increase from the previous month.

The economy remains a significant concern for voters, with the cost of living cited as a primary driver of disapproval for former President Trump. Approximately half of voters believe Trump is handling the economy poorly. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows substantial increases in energy costs, with fuel oil up 42.9% and gasoline up 26.7% over the last 12 months. A majority of Americans report that they are managing or struggling to cover basic expenses, and over half of respondents across party lines feel the economy is worsening under current leadership.

Similar phishing scams have affected other political committees and candidates from both parties in recent years. In 2020, the Republican National Committee lost $44,000 in a phishing scam.
