DIY SOS Transforms Home for Grieving Family After Father's Unexpected Death

A family home in Feniton, Devon, has undergone a significant transformation thanks to the BBC series DIY SOS and hundreds of volunteers, providing a supportive environment for a mother and her three children after the unexpected death of her husband. The episode, titled 'A New Beginning for Georgie,' documented the emotional journey of Georgie and her children: Hugo, 4; Felicity, 9; and Eliza, 7, who is autistic.

Georgie and her husband, Chris, a carpenter, had purchased a two-bedroom house with plans to renovate it. Their project was tragically interrupted just three months prior to the renovation documented in the episode, when Chris died suddenly at home after suffering a seizure. This left their half-finished home in a state Georgie described as 'carnage' and a constant reminder of their unfinished plans.

"We spent almost 10 years moving from house to house and we finally got this place last year," Georgie recalled. "We thought we would have a lifetime to do it. But then he died and it was all taken away." She described the traumatic experience of witnessing her husband's collapse and performing CPR, a moment that deeply affected the family, particularly their daughter Eliza.

The DIY SOS team, led by presenter Nick Knowles, enlisted the help of skilled tradespeople and a large volunteer base, many of whom knew the family personally. Over eight days, they worked to transform the property into a functional and comforting family home.

Key changes included a rear extension to create an open-plan kitchen diner and a second extension adding a utility room, a toilet, and a new bedroom for Felicity. The number of bedrooms was increased to four to provide more space for everyone. In the children's rooms, the team made significant adjustments. Hugo and Eliza swapped rooms, with Eliza's bed, built by her late father, being carefully preserved and moved. The former small box room was enlarged to become a proper single bedroom. Special attention was given to Eliza's room, which had been a source of trauma, transforming it into an animal-themed sanctuary. Felicity's room was designed with a wizardry theme, complete with a secret door and Harry Potter books.

A particular focus was the garden, which Chris had also been working on before his death. The team built a bridge over the pond, a feature Chris had intended to create. The finished garden, which the family dubbed 'Daddy's pond,' was adorned with faux ducks, a tribute to Chris's wish to have ducks there.

Despite facing challenges during the renovation, including a truck getting stuck in cement and difficult weather conditions, the team persevered. They also took great care to preserve Eliza's bed, even enduring a moment of panic when it was feared the bed might have been mistakenly discarded.

Upon unveiling the completed home, Georgie expressed her disbelief and gratitude. "It's huge and neat, Chris would be so happy," she said. She described the new space as enabling the family to 'breathe' and move forward, a stark contrast to the overwhelming stress of living in a constant building site.

"We can't fix the loss of a husband and a father, but that grieving process would be better in a safe, comfortable, embracing environment rather than building site," Nick Knowles commented on the project's aim. The volunteers were met with a round of applause from Georgie and her children, who expressed their profound appreciation for the community's support in creating their new home.
