DIY SOS to be 'Rested' in 2027 as BBC Seeks Savings
The long-running home renovation series will be replaced by a 'more cost-effective' spin-off show.
The BBC has announced that the popular home renovation series "DIY SOS" will be "rested" in 2027 as part of the corporation's ongoing efforts to save money. Reports suggesting the show would be axed were denied, with the BBC stating the program will instead be replaced by a spin-off featuring highlights from past episodes.
A spokesperson for the BBC confirmed the decision, explaining that "in light of the BBC's savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore." The new show, titled "DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life," will revisit successful past projects and aim to expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective manner.
The program, presented by Nick Knowles, has been a staple on BBC One and iPlayer since its debut in 1999. Its 35th series is currently airing. "DIY SOS" focuses on transforming the homes of families facing significant hardship, including severe illness, disability, bereavement, or severe building disasters.
The decision to rest "DIY SOS" comes amid the BBC's broader initiative to achieve £500 million in savings over a three-year period. This initiative has already led to the cancellation of several other well-known television programs, including "Blankety Blank," "Celebrity Mastermind," and "Live At The Apollo."
