The Diwali Foundation's annual 'Basket Brigade' event in Birmingham saw hundreds of volunteers assemble food parcels for families struggling with inflation.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered in Birmingham to assemble food parcels for families facing the escalating cost of living. The event, organized by The Diwali Foundation at the RSRS Centre in Hockley, marked the ninth iteration of the Diwali Basket Brigade.
Deepak Parekh, founder of the initiative, stated that the cost of living crisis persists and that the effort aims to bring "light and hope" to families in need, drawing a parallel to Diwali's theme of light over darkness.
The Diwali Foundation, based in Herefordshire, reports that over 12% of households in the UK are experiencing food poverty. The organization collaborates with approximately forty food banks and charities to distribute aid to vulnerable households. To date, the foundation has provided around 23,470 food hampers.
