Iain Ashmore, 45, was stopped by Lincolnshire Police on July 23 while driving a white Ford Transit Connect, despite being disqualified from operating a vehicle. Bodycam footage captured the interaction where an officer informed Ashmore of his 59 accumulated points.
Instead of acknowledging his status, Ashmore joked about the number of points and claimed he was being unfairly targeted, stating he had been stopped three times in one month. When informed of his 59 points, he casually asked if the number had decreased, later correcting himself to 61 points.
Accumulating 12 or more points within three years typically leads to a minimum six-month driving ban. Points can be issued for offenses such as speeding, which can incur three to six points, or using a mobile phone while driving, which carries six points.
When questioned about how he retained his license with 61 points, Ashmore attributed it to being a "very good person." He also downplayed his insurance costs, calling them "astronomical" but "just a pretty penny," asserting it was cheaper than insurance for lorry drivers.
Ashmore, residing in Witham St Hughes, Lincolnshire, pleaded guilty to three counts of driving while disqualified, three counts of driving without insurance, and one count of using a mobile phone while driving. These offenses occurred on May 30, June 23, and July 23.
Lincoln Magistrates' Court sentenced Ashmore last month to an eight-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months. He received an additional 12-month driving ban, extending his disqualification until July 2027. He was also ordered to pay court costs and a surcharge.
PC Mark Solder of Lincolnshire Police commented that Ashmore continued to drive despite being banned and poses a risk to other road users. "Driving is a privilege but does come with responsibilities and costs that the vast majority of road users understand they must meet," Solder stated. "He is a risk on the roads and a menace to other lawful drivers."
