The identity of a young woman last seen speaking with Nolan Wells before he disappeared on Horn Island has been revealed, but accounts of the events leading up to his death remain disputed, according to a report.
Wells, 18, was on Horn Island, located off the Mississippi Gulf Coast, on July 4 with a group of friends. His companions reported leaving the island without him because he stayed behind to talk to Katie McCormack, 19. However, McCormack's sister has offered a different narrative.
According to Wells' friends, the group's boat began taking on water due to a bilge pump issue, prompting them to return to the mainland. Wells, reportedly engrossed in conversation with McCormack, told his friends to leave without him. Ashlee Cole, mother of Wells' best friend Warren Hudson, stated that Wells remained on the island.
Conversely, Gracie, McCormack's sister, disputes this account. She stated that McCormack believed Wells intended to leave with his friends and that McCormack assumed Wells would not be left behind. Gracie added that McCormack was on the island with her own group of friends and was later picked up by her brother and his fiancée. McCormack's family has provided their account to Wells' mother and authorities.
There has been no suggestion of wrongdoing on McCormack's part. McCormack herself responded to a social media post, stating, "What’s understood don’t have to be said. I love y’all. Just pray for his family and his friends. I’m good, and all I can do is pray for healing over them. This is a terrible situation all in all."
These conflicting accounts have caused distress for Wells' grieving family, who have enlisted civil rights lawyer Ben Crump to investigate the circumstances. Crump has highlighted the discrepancy: "She saying he went and got on the boat. They saying he didn’t get on the boat. So which is it? Somebody must not be telling the truth."
Wells' body was discovered in the water off Horn Island on July 6, two days after he was last seen. The investigation into the events of that day is ongoing.
