Disneyland Flooded by Sudden Downpour, Forcing Ride Stoppages and Fireworks Cancellation
A 15-minute cloudburst overwhelmed Anaheim's theme park, inundating walkways and disrupting attractions.
Disneyland experienced a sudden and intense downpour Friday night, leading to flooded walkways, temporary suspension of outdoor rides, and the cancellation of the park's fireworks display.
The brief but heavy rainstorm over Anaheim overwhelmed the park's drainage systems, turning popular areas into temporary waterways. Visitors shared videos on social media showing ankle-deep water in sections of Frontierland, Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and near the Haunted Mansion. One guest remarked on Instagram, "The Rivers of America just expanded into Frontierland."
Footage captured guests scrambling for higher ground, navigating along garden edges, and standing on benches to avoid the rising water. One parkgoer expressed surprise at the unexpected weather, noting on Instagram, "My weather app said no rain for 6 hours. 45 minutes later it said heavy rain in 18 min. Then it said ‘flash flood warning’! Totally out of no where."
Another visitor shared their experience, saying, "Bro I came to Disneyland the wrong day it fr wasn’t supposed to rain today. Bro I didn’t even have a hoodie or an umbrella, my feet were soaked n I was all wet bro."
The deluge also affected Fantasyland, with standing water accumulating between Sleeping Beauty Castle and the Matterhorn Bobsleds. Shade canopies over outdoor dining areas became overwhelmed, causing cascades of water to fall onto seating below.
Disneyland staff, known as Cast Members, worked to clear clogged drains and debris. One visitor documented the effort, stating, "A brave Cast Member is unclogging the drain as we speak. Our dry shoes, our socks, and the future of Frontierland are in your hands."
The flooding extended to transportation hubs, with standing water pooling at the Mickey & Friends and Pixar Pals parking tram terminals, making late-night departures more challenging for families.
Outdoor rides were temporarily suspended due to the heavy rain and detected lightning over Orange County. The evening's fireworks show was also canceled as a precautionary measure against high winds, wet weather, and lightning risks.
Operations teams worked into the night to clear the resort of debris and pump away accumulated water in preparation for weekend visitors.
