Disneyland Faces Chaos as Sudden Downpour Floods Park, Cancels Fireworks
Torrential rain and thunder struck the popular theme park, forcing ride closures and disrupting evening entertainment.
Disneyland experienced significant disruptions Friday evening as a sudden and intense downpour led to flooding throughout the park, necessitating the shutdown of attractions and the cancellation of its scheduled fireworks display. The National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for Orange County, including Anaheim, the home of Disneyland, effective from 7:28 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.
Park visitors shared numerous videos and images on social media depicting the unexpected deluge. Footage showed water rapidly accumulating on walkways and in themed areas like Frontierland and Tomorrowland, with drains struggling to cope with the volume of rain. Attendees were seen navigating through standing water, many clad in plastic ponchos. Some reports indicated that lightning and thunder accompanied the heavy rain.
"I was there and it rained HARD for about 20 minutes. I wouldn’t blame it on the drains being clogged, maybe a little slow, but mostly overwhelmed. All the streets of Anaheim were flooded too," one social media user commented. Another shared, "I was in the line for Haunted Mansion when it rained, there was no shade we got soaked."
Despite the disruptive weather, some visitors embraced the unexpected conditions. One parkgoer, Fabian Bon, shared a video with the caption, "When it rains, it pours. Are you going to complain about rain or are you gonna dance in it?" He and a friend continued their visit, with Bon posting a photo in front of Cinderella's Castle, noting, "There is something magical about feeling the rain at Disneyland."
Addison Zegan, who operates The Disneylanders social media account, described the event to the Los Angeles Times as witnessing "the biggest California raindrops I’ve ever seen." He added that "It was dark, and people were really confused. They were hunkering down because the rain was so bad."
According to a park spokesperson, some areas were temporarily closed during the storm. The evening's fireworks performance was also canceled as a result of the weather. The heavy rain subsided within approximately an hour, and conditions began to clear.
Looking ahead, visitors planning to be in the area should be aware of potential further rainfall. The NWS has issued a coastal hazard warning for San Diego and Orange Counties, which is in effect from Sunday morning through Thursday afternoon. This warning advises coastal residents to prepare for tides and water levels that may be one to 1.7 feet above normal. The Daily Mail has reached out to Disneyland for further comment.
