Walt Disney World is experiencing a fan uproar over the introduction of its new generation of solar-powered trash cans. The upgrade, intended to improve waste management with features like automatic compacting and fullness alerts for cast members, has ignited a wave of criticism from dedicated park visitors.

The new bins are gradually replacing the familiar, flat-topped cans throughout the resort's theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs. While Disney states the enhanced receptacles will help keep the parks cleaner, many fans lament the loss of the older design's practicality. The flat tops of the previous cans had become unofficial, convenient surfaces for holding food and drinks, particularly during EPCOT's popular festivals. The new bins feature curved tops, which fans argue are less suitable for this purpose.

Discussions on social media platforms like Reddit, TikTok, and Instagram reveal widespread disappointment. "Yes i know there’s bigger issues in the world. but it just baffles me how modern Disney can f—k up something as simple as the trash can," one Redditor commented. Another expressed a similar sentiment on TikTok, stating, "Eating on top of a trash can at EPCOT during a festival is basically a rite of passage. Not glamorous. But PRACTICAL."

Disney representatives have described the new bins using the slogan "Same magic. Smarter can," emphasizing their design to support cast members and maintain park cleanliness. The new cans offer hand-operated chutes and foot pedals for waste disposal. Despite the technological advancements, the emotional connection some fans have to the original trash cans is evident, with some even considering them a cherished piece of Disney World history, having inspired merchandise and original models fetching high prices at auction.
