A Chicago hospital executive accused of a $15 million embezzlement scheme and a separate $300 million COVID-19 testing fraud has ceased efforts to block his extradition from Serbia to the United States. Dr. Anosh Ahmed, 42, faces federal charges in two separate indictments.
Ahmed was arrested in Belgrade on November 30 and has been held since. He previously fled the U.S. in 2023, becoming a fugitive. His decision to no longer contest extradition could be an attempt to have charges in the COVID-19 testing case dismissed. In that case, Ahmed was indicted alongside associates Mahmood Sami Khan and Suhaib Ahmad Chaudhry. Prosecutors allege the group submitted approximately $894 million in false claims, leading to about $300 million in fraudulent reimbursements.
US District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman recently dismissed the charges against Khan and Chaudhry due to alleged prosecutorial misconduct during grand jury proceedings. Ahmed had sought to join that motion, but his request was denied because he had not submitted to the court's jurisdiction. Judge Coleman noted that Ahmed's claim of residing in a Serbian jail due to a "tainted indictment" was unsubstantiated, as his arrest stemmed from two warrants. She stated that he could not benefit from the justice system he was actively evading.
Even if the COVID-19 testing charges are dismissed, Ahmed may still face prosecution in the embezzlement case related to his former employer, Loretto Hospital. The U.S. Attorney's office has indicated plans to re-indict defendants in that case. Ahmed's co-defendants in the Loretto case, former CEO Dr. George Miller Jr. and former chief transformation officer Dr. Heather Bergdahl, were offered deferred prosecution agreements. Medical supply executive Dr. Sameer Suhail is also reportedly in negotiations for a similar deal. Ahmed, Bergdahl, Miller, and Suhail are accused of siphoning funds from the hospital by submitting vendor payments for unprovided goods and services, directing the money to their own accounts.
Ahmed resigned from Loretto Hospital in 2021 amidst fallout from an alleged COVID-19 vaccine scheme. At the time, he reportedly offered early vaccinations to 72 employees at Trump Tower Chicago. He also claimed to have vaccinated Eric Trump, though he later described the remark as a joke. Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
Ahmed and his wife, Mouna Mouissat, 31, have also been linked to significant properties. Mouissat, a French national, opened two real estate companies in France in 2023, listing herself, Ahmed, and their son as partners. The couple also had ties to two large properties in Houston, including a mansion valued at $4.6 million. That property was transferred from Ahmed's name to a Chicago-based holding company in 2023 and subsequently to an unnamed private owner associated with another nearby property. Suhail is listed as a resident at the $4.6 million mansion, according to public records.
