Dippy Eggs and Soldiers Crowned Britain's Most Nostalgic Dish
A survey reveals that the simple breakfast combination evokes the strongest childhood memories for Britons, surpassing other popular comfort foods.
Dippy eggs and soldiers have been named the most nostalgic dish in Britain, according to a recent survey. The beloved breakfast item secured the top spot, evoking comforting memories for 39% of those polled.
The survey, which polled 2,000 UK adults as part of the St Ewe Free Range Eggs 'For the Love of Egg' campaign, found that food has the power to transport individuals back to their childhoods, with 35% agreeing that certain dishes can instantly bring back memories.
Dippy eggs and soldiers emerged as the favorite, narrowly beating out Angel Delight, which garnered 38% of the vote. Other dishes that featured prominently in the top nostalgic foods include fish fingers, chips and beans, jelly and ice cream, and beans on toast, all tied at 37%. Apple crumble and custard (32%) and fairy cakes (27%) also made the top ten.
The research indicates that these nostalgic foods are not just relegated to memory, as many adults continue to enjoy them. Fourteen percent of adults still consume dippy eggs for dinner, 17% opt for them as a late-night snack, and 19% turn to them for a mood boost. Additionally, 18% prepare them when feeling unwell, and 10% rely on them to help with hangovers.
When it comes to the preferred bread for soldiers, white sliced bread remains the most popular choice at 49%, followed by wholemeal (13%) and sourdough (11%). Seasoning preferences vary, with 20% adding sea salt and 9% opting for Marmite.
Bex Tonks, founder and farmer of St Ewe, described dippy eggs and soldiers as "more than just a breakfast," calling them "one of Britain's great food rituals."
