A survey reveals the beloved breakfast combination evokes the strongest childhood memories for Britons, surpassing other popular comfort foods.
Dippy eggs and soldiers have been named the most nostalgic dish in Britain, according to a recent survey. The classic meal, featuring soft-boiled eggs served with strips of toast for dipping, was favored by 39% of respondents.
Other dishes appearing in the top rankings for evoking childhood memories include Angel Delight (38%), fish fingers, chips and beans (37%), and jelly and ice cream (37%). Apple crumble and custard (32%) and fairy cakes (27%) also made the top ten.
The survey of 2,000 UK adults, conducted as part of St Ewe Free Range Eggs' "For the Love of Egg" campaign, found that over a third (35%) believe food has the power to transport them back to their childhood. Additionally, 31% identified these dishes as the ultimate comfort food.
Dippy eggs continue to be a popular choice for adults, with 14% consuming them for dinner, 17% as a late-night snack, and 19% turning to them for a mood boost. The comfort food is also a go-to for 18% when feeling unwell and 10% for hangover relief.
White sliced bread remains the preferred vehicle for dipping at 49%, followed by wholemeal (13%) and sourdough (11%). Seasoning preferences vary, with 20% adding sea salt and 9% opting for Marmite.
Bex Tonks, founder and farmer at St Ewe, described dippy eggs and soldiers as "one of Britain's great food rituals."
