Footage of WNBA player DiJonai Carrington mocking a taxi driver who spoke Arabic has resurfaced online following a controversial on-court incident and her subsequent social media post.
The resurfaced clip, originally from a December 2024 Instagram live stream, shows Carrington and her friends in a taxi. Carrington alleges they were removed from the vehicle after attempting to play their music. In the video, she is heard ranting about the driver, who she claimed spoke Arabic.
"I don't know why white people think they can get away with trying to just scare black people by saying, 'Oh, I'm gonna call the police.' Ok, and we did nothing wrong, so that's fine. Go ahead and call the police," Carrington says in the clip.
When a second taxi arrived, Carrington observed the first driver speaking to the new driver in a language she initially perceived as Arabic. She later realized the second driver spoke Spanish and then mocked the first driver, calling him a "dummy" for not speaking Arabic and speaking Spanish instead.
"Arabic and Spanish do not sound the same," Carrington is heard saying.
This footage has been recirculated following an incident during a WNBA game on Saturday, where Carrington was ejected after a flagrant 2 foul on Indiana Fever player Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham was driving to the basket when Carrington struck her in the face.
Following her ejection, Carrington posted on social media, "WHITE PRIVILEGE @indianafever." Cunningham, however, dismissed Carrington's comment, stating that the incident had "nothing to do with race" and that she deserved to be ejected.
"Last year, I did the same thing and I got kicked out. And I deserved to be kicked out. There's no reason even to play that card," Cunningham told ESPN after the game. She suggested that Carrington was seeking attention.
Cunningham also addressed the foul, calling it "unnecessary" and adding that she had "no beef" with Carrington. "I do think when people play the Fever, we're nationally televised, there's a lot of eyes on us and people just want attention," Cunningham said.
This is not the first time Carrington has been involved in a controversy with a high-profile player. In 2024, she poked Caitlin Clark in the eye during a game, an incident Clark described as unintentional. Carrington later appeared to mock the incident in a social media stream.
