Dictionary.com Names 'Maxxing' as 2026 Word of the Year, Sparking Debate

Dictionary.com has declared "maxxing" its Word of the Year for 2026, a term that has rapidly gained traction online to describe the act of maximizing or increasing self-optimization. The selection has already generated significant discussion and, in some quarters, frustration.

According to Dictionary.com's research, the use of "maxxing" surged by nearly 19 times in 2026 compared to the previous year. A significant portion of this increase is attributed to terms like "looksmaxxing," which saw an over 900% rise in usage.

"In a year dominated by discussions of technology’s role in society, it’s only natural that we selected a word that was forged online," Dictionary.com stated in its announcement. The term can be used independently or as a suffix to denote the optimization of various aspects of life, including fitness, diet, and appearance.

Popular variations include "fibermaxxing" for dietary fiber intake, "proteinmaxxing" for protein consumption, and "productivity-maxxing" for improving efficiency. However, "looksmaxxing" has garnered the most attention. Originating in online communities in the mid-2010s, it describes the pursuit of optimizing one's physical appearance.

The term gained mainstream visibility through platforms like TikTok in the early 2020s, notably amplified by influencers such as Braden Peters, also known as Clavicular. Despite its widespread use, the announcement of "maxxing" as Word of the Year was met with mixed reactions on social media. Many users expressed weariness with the trend, with comments ranging from "I understand why, but I still hate this for us as a society" to "We are living in the worst timeline."

Conversely, some users embraced the choice, seeing it as a fitting reflection of contemporary culture. One commenter noted, "Such a spot-on word for 2026! I’m definitely knowledge-maxxing by reading more every day."

Other contenders for Dictionary.com's 2026 Word of the Year included "affordability," "data center," "odyssey," and "unc" (a slang term for "uncool" or "out of touch").

Last year, Dictionary.com selected "67," a Gen Z and Gen Alpha term used as a catch-all phrase for middle school students, which also proved to be a point of contention, particularly among older generations.
