Dick Van Dyke, the 100-year-old Hollywood icon, was recently seen using a walker during a rare public outing with his wife of 14 years, Arlene Silver, in Los Angeles. The couple stopped by a Starbucks drive-thru and appeared to be enjoying a leisurely day.
Van Dyke, known for his roles in "Mary Poppins" and "The Dick Van Dyke Show," kept his attire casual, wearing a blue sweat suit and a short-sleeved white shirt. An air freshener featuring a photo of the Emmy winner was observed hanging from the rearview mirror of their vehicle, adding a personal touch to their outing.
Silver, a makeup artist, was dressed casually in a printed black sweatshirt, green tank top, black pants, and sneakers. She carried a brown leather purse. The couple married in February 2012, after meeting six years prior. At the time of their marriage, Van Dyke was 86 and Silver was 46.
Van Dyke was previously married to Margie Willett from 1948 to 1984, and they had four children together. He celebrated his 100th birthday in December, an event his wife described as "perfect." To mark the occasion, Silver organized a flash mob performing a medley of his songs, followed by a party with close friends and family at their Malibu home.
Van Dyke has spoken about his wife's positive influence, telling ABC News that she provides him with energy, humor, and support. He also expressed that even at 100, he feels he has not lived enough and plans to continue living.
He attributes his health and longevity to an active lifestyle, including working out with Silver three days a week. Van Dyke stated he experiences no aches or pains and considers himself lucky. He also revealed that he gave up drinking in 1972 after alcohol had "ruined" his life, completing a two-week stint in rehab and adhering to the AA 12-step program.
Additionally, Van Dyke quit smoking, admitting he is fortunate to still have his lungs, despite being a heavy smoker in his younger years. He credits his dancing career, genetics, or both for his lung health. He also noted that he never used drugs, unlike many of his generation who smoked and drank.
Van Dyke maintains a healthy diet, starting his day with bran and blueberries, and takes vitamins daily. He expressed surprise at his own longevity and current well-being, stating he never expected to live this long or feel this good.
Despite officially retiring at 75, Van Dyke has remained active in his career. He began his entertainment journey in radio in the late 1940s and later appeared in television shows such as "The Phil Silvers Show," "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and "Diagnosis Murder." His Broadway debut was in 1959, and he also starred in films like "Bye Bye Birdie," "Mary Poppins," and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
Throughout his career, Van Dyke has received numerous accolades, including six Emmy Awards, one Tony Award, and one Grammy Award. He was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1993.
