Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated Thursday that U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., is under federal investigation for allegedly marrying her brother as part of a fraudulent immigration scheme, and that she could face deportation if illegal activity is proven.
Mullin made the remarks to conservative podcaster Benny Johnson, discussing the ongoing investigation into the congresswoman. "We know that she married her brother to try to bring him to the United States," Mullin asserted. He also stated that the brother now resides in London.
Mullin suggested the investigation might uncover "illegal activity" related to the congresswoman's family migration to the United States. He cautioned that the case is still under investigation and emphasized it was not politically motivated. "If we actually move a case forward, it’s not a political case, it’s an actual case, because they did things wrong," Mullin said. "If you lied about certain things about your application. There’s no expiration to that. If we can prove it – that you shouldn’t have been here in the first place – we’ll deport you."
Rep. Omar became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2000, at the age of 17. She has previously denied marrying her brother.
