Dez Bryant Claims Police Held Him at Gunpoint During Road Rage Incident
The former NFL star alleges officers pointed a weapon at him and his daughters after a confrontation with two other drivers.
Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant has claimed that police officers held him at gunpoint in front of his daughters following a road rage incident. The confrontation began when Bryant alleged that two men were driving recklessly and cut him off as they were both heading to the same restaurant.
According to Bryant, an argument ensued, escalating when one of the men allegedly threatened to pull a firearm. "He go to threatening me and basically saying, um, he'll insinuate that he'll, you know, he'll shoot me or whatever," Bryant recounted. He stated that he responded by telling the man, "You pull that gun, I'm telling you right now, you better use it because if you don't I'm going to do something to you."
No weapons were drawn by the individuals involved. Instead, one of the men reportedly attempted to film Bryant, who then pushed the phone away. When the man threatened to call the police, Bryant said he encouraged it.
Video evidence obtained by OutKick appears to show Bryant and the two other men being placed in handcuffs and instructed to lie on the ground while officers investigated. One officer is seen with an assault rifle pointed in the general direction of the individuals on the ground. Bryant's children and girlfriend reportedly arrived at the scene during the incident. A woman, identified as Bryant's girlfriend, can be heard in the background of the video stating that none of the men on the ground were armed.
Bryant stated that he was placed in the back of a squad car and was eventually released with a citation. The other men involved were also reportedly released. "I would rather you guys take us all down to the police station and do the proper investigation instead of just taking somebody else's side," Bryant said. "I felt like it was very one-sided."
Despite the incident, Bryant indicated that he maintains a positive relationship with local law enforcement, noting that he knows an officer whose son plays on the same high school football team as Bryant's child. "Every time I see him, we talk ball. We just talk about the regular things," Bryant said of that officer. "It's always been good. This situation was just extremely unfortunate."
