Devon Sawa Reacts to 'Coven Academy' Season Finale Cliffhanger
The actor discusses the surprising reveal that a main character is the mother of another, calling it "the biggest cliffhanger ever."
Devon Sawa, known for his roles in "Final Destination" and "Casper," is still processing the shocking season finale of "Coven Academy." He shared his surprise and excitement over the twist, noting that his 10-year-old daughter had a similar reaction.
The season finale revealed that Miss Graves (Tiffani Thiessen), the principal of Crescent Veil Academy and Mr. Cole's (Sawa) love interest, is actually the mother of Briar (Malina Pauli Weissman). Sawa described the reveal as a "huge bombshell" and "the biggest cliffhanger ever."
"Coven Academy" follows Briar as she attends Crescent Veil, a school for witches and warlocks in training, after her mother's death. Briar investigates her mother's past and uncovers the school's connection to her mother, who was also a witch. Briar forms a coven with classmates Sasha (Jordan Leftwich) and Tegan (Ora Duplass). She also develops a relationship with Jake (Malachi Barton), a warlock influenced by Mr. Cole's dark magic teachings. In a further twist, it's revealed that Mr. Cole is a shapeshifted William Bixton, who is also Jake's father.
Sawa explained that the revelation of his character's paternity was a surprise to the cast, learned during filming. "We didn’t know that going in," Sawa said. "We didn’t find that out until we were starting to shoot. And I think they told both me and Malachi separately and told us not to tell each other that we knew."
Regarding his character, Sawa enjoyed playing both the seemingly kind professor Mr. Cole and the sinister William Bixton. "It was a lot of fun. I mean, they’re both quite opposite. One’s definitely sinister. The other one’s kind of like the Robin Williams character in ‘Good Will Hunting.’ He’s the lovable teacher that all the students love," Sawa commented.
He praised Malachi Barton's performance, describing him as talented and grounded. Sawa believes William chose Jake to corrupt because Jake was an "easy target" who trusted Mr. Cole.
Sawa expressed his hope for a second season, suggesting that a potential romance between Mr. Cole and Miss Graves could be explored further. He also spoke highly of working with Tiffani Thiessen, calling her "down to earth and grounded and sweet."
The series was filmed in Canada, with set designers recreating the atmosphere of New Orleans. Sawa noted the impressive special effects used for the magic, comparing them favorably to "Harry Potter."
Reflecting on his career, Sawa mentioned his experience working with younger actors, feeling a responsibility to set a good example on set. He also touched on the differences in navigating fame now compared to his early career, particularly with the prevalence of social media.
Outside of "Coven Academy," Sawa recalled his time filming "Little Giants" with Rick Moranis, remembering him as a "sweetest guy" and the set as being like "summer camp."
