Devin McCourty Urges Bears to Pursue Giants' Kayvon Thibodeaux

Former NFL safety Devin McCourty has proposed that the Chicago Bears should explore trading for New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux. McCourty made the suggestion on Tuesday, following the Bears' defensive performance in their recent 59-37 victory over the Carolina Panthers, which saw Chicago allow 361 passing yards and 478 total yards.

"If you’re going to score a lot of points, then it comes down to your pass defense and your pass defense is impacted by your pass rushers or your cover guys," McCourty stated on "Up & Adams." "To me, I know everybody in New York is excited — you might want to call down to the Giants. ‘Hey, I know you got Abdul Carter, you got Brian Burns, what you thinking about with (Kayvon) Thibodeaux? Are you planning on extending him?’ Maybe that’s a call they make, you add a pass rusher."

The Bears' defense has been a point of concern as they aim to defend their NFC North title. With significant injuries, particularly in their secondary, the team faces a challenge in securing necessary defensive stops. McCourty drew a parallel to Chicago's mid-season acquisition of Montez Sweat from the Commanders three years prior, a move that bolstered their pass rush ahead of Sweat's free agency.

Thibodeaux, 25, is in the final year of his contract and has been playing a reduced role for the Giants. In their recent 28-20 win against the Cowboys, Thibodeaux played only 27 defensive snaps, accounting for 47 percent of the team's total. This contrasts with teammates Abdul Carter and Brian Burns, who played 91 percent and 84 percent of defensive snaps, respectively.

Acquiring Thibodeaux could allow the Bears to secure a pass rusher and potentially extend him before the offseason. However, a potential obstacle is the Giants' willingness to trade a player from their pass-rushing unit, especially after just one game, and whether they would receive adequate compensation. The Giants are reportedly in need of cornerback depth, and Chicago may not have a suitable player to offer in return. The hypothetical scenario includes the Giants potentially trading Thibodeaux for a draft pick that could aid them in acquiring disgruntled Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr.

"To me, it’s very hard to find good secondary play off the street and a lot of teams, they’re not going to just trade away defensive backs that they like," McCourty explained. "I think the Giants they might be in the area where you have a surplus and they feel like, ‘Hey, we might be able to give away a guy if you give us something we like.’ So, maybe they call the Giants and go that route."

The NFL trade deadline is November 10, following Week 10 of the season, providing both teams ample time to assess their season trajectories and needs.
