Detroit Makes Top 10 Most Rat-Infested Cities List for First Time

Detroit has entered the top 10 of Terminix's annual ranking of the most rodent-infested cities in the U.S., marking its first appearance on the list.

The pest control company based its 2025 ranking on service data from over 300 of its branches nationwide, identifying cities where residents most frequently utilize their rodent control services. New York City and Los Angeles maintained their positions as the top two most infested cities, while Philadelphia moved up to the third spot.

Detroit's inclusion at No. 10 signifies a shift from its previous position at No. 11. Residents in Detroit have previously voiced concerns about rodent infestations. In a 2023 memorandum, Detroit Mayor Mary Sheffield, then serving as city council president, noted that rodent infestations were a primary complaint from residents during community meetings. She stated at the time, "In a recent community meeting that I held, rodent infestations were a main complaint among our residents," adding that "many demolition properties become homes for rat infestation."

Following Detroit, the list includes Hartford, Atlanta, Baltimore, Tampa, and Sacramento, completing the top 15.

According to Terminix, cities on the list share three common factors: large populations, abundant food sources, and numerous hiding places for rodents. "Together, these conditions give rats and mice the resources they need to survive and reproduce," the company stated in a release. Large populations contribute to significant food waste, with dumpsters, alleys, and parks offering easy access to sustenance. Older buildings, subway systems, and sewer networks further provide habitats for rodents.

Terminix recommends preventative measures for residents to mitigate rodent infestations. These include sealing cracks and openings in structures, storing food in airtight containers, and maintaining clean living spaces free of food residue. "If you live in one of the most rat-infested cities, these steps can significantly help lower the risk of a rodent infestation," the company advised.
