Deshaun Watson Remains Defiant Amidst Pressure After Browns' Week 1 Loss

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson expressed defiance in the face of mounting pressure following his team's decisive Week 1 loss and his own lackluster performance. Watson, playing in his first game since October 2024, struggled before garbage time in the Browns' 34-10 defeat to the Jaguars.

"Personally, I think all that is for the media," Watson stated Wednesday when questioned about job security and his performance. "I think the media has this expectation that I’m supposed to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. Until that happens, I guess it’s going to be the same situation. My job is to make sure I’m playing well so that we can try to get a win and keep moving forward from there."

Watson completed 11 passes for 100 yards and threw an interception before connecting on a touchdown pass in the final quarter of the Jaguars game. He had secured the starting quarterback position over second-year players Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel during training camp. However, his opening-game performance led to calls for him to be replaced after just one week.

Despite the public reaction, Browns head coach Todd Monken reiterated his support for Watson. "I anticipate Deshaun will be our starter," Monken said Monday. "We got to play better around him, we got to call it better, and he’s got to play better. It wasn’t just our inability to function consistently as an offense was a byproduct of ‘we’ coaching and playing."

Earlier in the season, Watson had publicly criticized fans for booing him during a preseason game in Cleveland, calling their behavior "disrespectful." He later issued an apology for those remarks.

The Browns are scheduled to play the Buccaneers in Tampa on Sunday, followed by their home opener against the Panthers in Week 3.
