Anecdotes about the late broadcaster Derryn Hinch have surfaced following his death at age 82, including a previously unreported detail about an affair with actress Rowena Wallace. Hinch, known for his decades in broadcasting and a brief political career, was married four times.
During his tenure at Melbourne radio station 3AW from 1979 to 1987, Hinch reportedly used the Starland Vocal Band's 1976 hit "Afternoon Delight" as a secret signal to Wallace. According to a former colleague, Hinch would play the song near the end of his program as a cue for Wallace, indicating that his home would be clear.
This practice allowed Hinch, who was married to Jacki Weaver at the time, to meet Wallace for clandestine meetings. Wallace is best known for her role as 'Pat the Rat' in the television series Sons and Daughters.
Wallace's manager, Stephen Moriarty, stated that he had not heard of the alleged affair but did not deny it, remarking, "She could well have. I'm not saying she wouldn't. It certainly sounds like the sort of thing she'd do." He added that Wallace, who has been in poor health, would not wish to discuss the matter.
Hinch himself confirmed the story in a December 2023 interview on Sunshine Coast radio station 92.7 FM. When asked about the "urban myth" of playing "Afternoon Delight" as a signal, Hinch responded, "It's true."
He also shared an anecdote about the night Wallace won her Gold Logie in 1984. He recalled taking Wallace back to his place after drinks, and the next morning, he found her Gold Logie award on his bedside table. "I don't remember winning that," he said of the award.
Attempts to contact Jacki Weaver's manager for comment were unsuccessful.
