Derryn Hinch, a prominent Australian radio host and former federal senator, has died at the age of 82. A longtime friend confirmed his death to the Daily Mail, stating he passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday night.
Annette Philpott, a former colleague and personal assistant, confirmed the broadcaster's death, attributing it to old age. "He's had really tough times of late. He's been in and out of hospital. I'm assuming his heart just gave out," Philpott said.
In April, Hinch had shared on social media that he was not feeling well but remained positive about his situation. "BUT. I am still moving. Pretty happy. Thinking. Going out. Catching up with friends," he wrote at the time. "Maybe one more year or 10. Who knows? So enjoy. Appreciate still being here. Just do it. Be positive."
Hinch, often referred to as the 'Human Headline' for his distinctive reporting style, had a lengthy career in broadcasting and a stint in federal politics. His passing marks the end of an era for many Australian media consumers.
