Dermatologist Shares Anti-Aging Skincare Advice for Women in Their 30s and 40s
Dr. Marnie Nussbaum emphasizes consistent prevention, key ingredients, and professional guidance for maintaining youthful skin.
Celebrity dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum, 44, shared her insights on maintaining a youthful complexion, emphasizing consistency, prevention, and targeted skincare ingredients, particularly for women in their 30s and beyond. Speaking on the "Well with Arielle Lorre" podcast, Nussbaum advised women to "bank their collagen" starting in their 30s, as collagen production naturally declines by one to two percent annually, becoming noticeable around age 36.
Key Ingredients for Skin Health
Dr. Nussbaum recommends focusing on a few potent ingredients rather than following fleeting beauty trends. For women in their 30s, she highlights vitamin C, retinol, peptides, and moisturizing ingredients that support the skin barrier. Retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, can help improve skin texture and pigmentation by stimulating cell turnover and collagen production. However, she cautions that retinol may not be suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or rosacea and should be avoided during pregnancy, while trying to conceive, or breastfeeding. For those experiencing irritation from retinol, bakuchiol, a plant-derived alternative, is suggested as a less irritating option that may take longer to yield results.
Peptides, described as short-chain amino acids and the building blocks of collagen and elastin, are another ingredient Nussbaum champions. She also advises the careful introduction of chemical exfoliants like glycolic, salicylic, and lactic acids to improve skin texture and congestion, recommending a gradual approach to assess skin tolerance.
A Streamlined Skincare Routine
Nussbaum advocates for a straightforward daily routine. She uses her own Dr Marnie Facial Serum, formulated with peptides, collagen, niacinamide, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and bakuchiol. At night, she incorporates exfoliating pads before serum application and continues to recommend retinol where appropriate, adjusting strength based on skin tolerance to avoid redness or irritation. She also emphasizes caring for the neck and eye areas, which are often overlooked. Recognizing that skin can become drier with age, particularly approaching perimenopause, she stresses the importance of moisturization.
Consistent daily use of SPF 30 or higher is crucial, even indoors, and reapplication every two hours when outdoors is advised.
Professional Treatments and Aging in the 40s
Nussbaum notes that many celebrities maintain their skin through consistent care, even after cosmetic procedures. She favors collagen-stimulating treatments like Clear + Brilliant laser treatments and radiofrequency microneedling, but stresses that the best approach depends on individual concerns, skin type, and practitioner experience. She cautions against choosing treatments solely based on trends, advising clients to discuss their goals with a qualified provider.
In the 40s, changes like more significant collagen loss, fat pad reduction, and bone structure shifts can lead to increased sagging and deeper wrinkles. For skin laxity, Nussbaum mentions ultrasound-based tightening treatments such as Ultherapy, alongside resurfacing procedures and radiofrequency microneedling. She uses a combination treatment, Secret Pro Duo, for texture, fine lines, and firmness.
She reiterates that professional consultation is essential for selecting appropriate treatments and that while procedures like Botox can be considered, there is no pressure to start them at a specific age. Nussbaum concludes by emphasizing that peptides remain a highly underutilized ingredient in many skincare regimens.
